To get around this dilemma, printer OEMs combined oil-based inks with robust receptor coatings that fully encapsulate the inks. The oil-based inks never dry in the nozzles of the printhead and the encapsulating coating quickly makes the prints dry enough for high-speed throughput. Once oil-based inks arrived on the scene, graphic producers could begin accepting orders for higher-volume jobs with faster turnaround times.
