Canon, Epson, Fujifilm report on their disaster aid.
On November 8, Typhoon Haiyan (aka Yolanda) – one of the most powerful storms ever recorded – struck the central Philippines, causing massive damage and loss of life. According to UN officials, about 11 million people have been affected and many have been left homeless.
Companies within our industry have announced their specific relief efforts:
* Canon: The Canon Group is aiding in the relief efforts for victims of the typhoon with a donation totaling 10 million yen (approximately US$102,000). The company is currently considering to which humanitarian aid organization the donation will be made. In a press release, the company states: “We at Canon extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this catastrophe and our thoughts go out to the victims and their families. Although the road to recovery will be challenging and take time, we hope that the region will soon be able to begin the rebuilding and healing process.”
* Epson: Epson Precision (Philippines) Inc., Epson Philippines Corporation, and Seiko Epson Corporation have announced a donation of Php 2 million (approx. US$46,000) to assist the disaster-relief efforts. The money was donated through Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), a local non-profit organization. In a press release, the company states: “Epson wishes to extend its sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives, and hopes for the speedy recovery of the areas damaged by the disaster.” Epson reports that it will consider extending further support when the full effects of the typhoon are known.
* Fujifilm: Fujifilm Holdings Corporation has decided to donate a total value of 22 million yen as relief aid to the victims of the typhoon. The donation will include medical products manufactured by Fujifilm and donations from group companies; in addition, the company reports it will continue to provide support through employee donations. Fujifilm president Shigehiro Nakajima stated, “We express [our] sincerest condolences to all those who fell victim to the typhoon which hit the Central Philippines on November 8, 2013, and express [our] deepest sympathies to those who are suffering from the disaster. We sincerely hope for the earliest possible recovery for all individuals suffering from the typhoon.”
The American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) reports that it has provided initial financial assistance and is also lending people, expertise, and equipment to support relief efforts in the Philippines. Those individuals and companies wanting to help can go to www.redcross.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS to donate to typhoon relief; people can also mail in a donation to their local Red Cross chapter.
