FunkeeFish creates car wrap with mashup of images.
Jon Dawson, incoming head of design at Funkeefish, had no time to waste the day he started his brand-new job. The Essex, England-based shop was down to the wire for the deadline of the Avery Dennison Wrap Like a King competition, and they needed a graphic plan.
“The idea came to me to combine a number of things that cheer me up into one fun image: Funkeefish (seen swimming in the alien’s goldfish bowl helmet), science fiction, my old Nissan S-Cargo van, [British] TV presenter Carol Vorderman, halftone patterns, and a certain yellow submarine,” Dawson says.
The designer kick-started the process by hand painting with acrylics; he then photographed his artwork and touched it up in Photoshop. Dawson says the halftone patterns were created by placing lining tape on the car, mapping the result, then generating vectors for the cut vinyl, which was made from Avery Dennison Colorflow Rising Sun Red/Gold.
The remainder of the 230-square-foot wrap was printed on the shop’s Roland Soljet Pro4 XR-640 onto Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film. The entirety was laminated with Avery DOL 1460 gloss laminate. Installation on the Ford Fiesta ST spanned three days with a team of three or four – all of whom are certified Avery Specialist Installers.
Although they weren’t named a semi-finalist in the Wrap Like a King contest, Funkeefish plans to continue using the vehicle for their own promotions and events. It certainly aligns with the shop’s identifying statement: “Funkeefish was born from a need to stand out from the crowd.”
