VersaCoater from C&J

Sheetfed coater is compatible with photo, inkjet, and digital-press prints.

Korea-based C&J Inc. has introduced the VersaCoater UV Liquid Coater. Offering compatibility with photo, inkjet, and digital-press (Xerox iGen3 and DocuColor, HP Indigo) prints, the VersaCoater is available in 17-, 24-, and 36-in. widths and features speeds from 15 to 90 ft/min (dependent on coating).

The sheetfed coater can handle thin or thick photo paper, flex, semi-rigid, or rigid sheet substrates up to 0.5-in. thick. To help achieve its top speeds, optional feeders and stackers (both sold separately) support up to 4000 impressions an hour (11 x 17 on the 17-in. machine and 18 x 22 on the 24-in. machine); no feeder/stacker is available for the 36-in. coater. The VersaCoater can handle printed sheets as long as 120 in.

Utilizing gloss, luster, or matte Versa-Coat UV coating liquid, this machine puts down the coating in variable-coating thicknesses, and then applies a texture with its Embossed Rollers. The coated and textured prints are cured to plastic hard-coat film that remains flexible using a low-wattage mercury-vapor UV-lamp system.

The coater can come equipped with two coating paths-upper and lower-to allow users to set up for running different textures or coatings without multiple changeovers. The bottom path can accommodate thicker media, while the top path is dedicated to flexible stocks no thicker than 30 mil.

With a footprint comparable to a color copier, the enclosed system ensures dust-free prints, and allows the liquid to be recirculated. The VersaCoater comes with a choice of two texture rollers-available textures include smooth, crystal, fine canvas, linen, or leather.

Price: Dual-path 17-in. VersaCoater, $24,995; 24-in., $34,995; and 36-in., $52,995. Single-path units are $4000 less than the Dual-Path units.
