Putting the Digital in Packaging: Concept Imaging Group

Retail specialist takes campaign from start to finish.

The foundation of Innomark Communications was a 75-year-old printing services company. In 1990, the company owners set about creating an integrated merchandising organization, and, to that end, launched other divisions and acquired other companies. In 1995, the group added Concept Imaging Group, a high-end prepress company just down the street from the main operation in Miamisburg, Ohio. In 2000, the group created the corporate umbrella named Innomark, which now has 500-plus employees, about 40 of them at Concept Imaging proper.

In 2005, Concept installed one of the very first Inca Columbia Turbo printers. In addition, the company has two Mimaki JV5s that it uses for retail signage. “We deal strictly with retail and retail environments,” says Concept’s director of premedia and digital printing, Dave Cottman. “We’ll take a complete campaign from start to finish and out the door, right to store locations. We’ve been using the Mimakis for a year or so to print a lot of canvas—we’ve produced something like 30,000 sheets in a year on the two of them.”
On the Inca, Concept mostly prints pieces for test marketing and specialty applications. “Basically, we’ll do trade type of stuff on 24-point board. We’ve also done corrugated work,” says Cottman.

Concept isn’t standing pat, either. “We’re starting to do specialty, high-end fashion packaging on the Kodak NexPress we recently purchased,” says Cottman. The company has also purchased one of the new Inca Onset S20s—what Inca calls the “baby Onset.” “We’re currently getting ready to work with another client who’s looking for packaging on that,” Cottman continues. “After they saw the quality of the Onset Inca S20 and what we’re going to be able to do with that machine, they got very excited.”
