Kansas City’s Crown Center, a redevelopment project located on the southern edge of downtown, is know as a city-within-a-city. It features an extensive office community (including the headquarters of Hallmark Cards), shopping, residential properties, hotels, and an ever-growing entertainment district. Merlin Entertainments Group, a location-based entertainment provider, planned to increase the Center’s appeal by adding two theme-based attractions: LegoLand Discovery Center, an interactive venue with a Lego-recreation of a Kansas City hands-on play area, 4D Cinema, and rides; and SeaLife, an indoor aquarium showcasing more than 5000 sea creatures.

To help promote the two new attractions, Merlin called for out-of-home identification signage to be displayed on the exterior walls of Crown Center, enticing guests in to visit the amusements. Print Big Solutions (a Digigraph Xpress company, printbig.com), based in Kansas City, was chosen to create the graphics.

“We had been doing wallpaper printing for one of the subcontractors on this project – they were happy with our work and recommended us to output the LegoLand and SeaLife outdoor graphics,” says Michelle DeWitt Smith, Print Big’s project manager and CIO. “This project began with wall-mural interiors for one area of the LegoLand attraction and migrated to a majority of the interior wall, floor, and display graphics.”

Because the exterior walls featured an existing custom steel frame, the graphics had to be designed to fit its grid. “We handled the field measurements, coordinated with the general contractor, and came up with the installation method that would accommodate their desired look, while providing a durable, premium display,” says Smith.

The Merlin creative team, headquartered in the UK, designed the graphics using Adobe Creative Suite. Hard proofing was done with team members on site, as well as e-proofing for off-site staff.

Print Big used its Durst Rho 500 to output the banners onto Oldham Group 9-ounce knitted mesh banner, ensuring that the graphics would be able to stand up against the wind. Finishing included sewing the panels together with an industrial sewing machine, and adhering 3M Dual Lock Tape for installation purposes.

Over a three-day period, four in-house installers secured the various 15 x 35-foot graphics to the front of the 30 x 180-foot steel frame on the exterior wall. Indoor graphics for LegoLand included 10-foot-high wallcoverings on Abaco Beach Korographics digital wallcovering media and General Formulations calendared vinyl, as well as floor graphics output onto 3M Controltac Plus Comply with a 2-mil cast overlaminate.
